Study at the oldest university in Germany
The University of Heidelberg was founded more then 600 years ago. The university originally boasted four faculties-theology, law, philosophy and medicine. Today, after continuous expansion, the university has 15 faculties.
Long History
Even at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century, Heidelberg was known as an intellectual centre. Poets like Josef von Eichendorff, Bettina von Arnim and Clemens von Brentano founded literary circles here and influenced the development of romantic literature. In the middle of the 19th century, the intellectual climate changed. Philosophical debates over the meaning of life lost their dominant place in the public discussion. People became more concerned with politics as well as medicine and the natural sciences.
Popular amoung Students of Medicine
The faculty of medicine has been one of the university's focal points since its founding. The university's programs of clinical medicine and cardiac research enjoy international renown. And the merging of the Mannheim Clinic and Heidelberg's Medical Faculty in 1964 created one of Germany's largest medical training centres. Mannheim is only a stone's throw from Heidelberg and it is no problem commuting between the two cities, either by train or streetcar. The commute takes between 15 and 25 minutes and is free for students with a semester ticket.
Good Reputation
Heidelberg's many scientific research institutions contribute to the city's good reputation. The European Laboratory for Molecular Biology is here as well as the German Cancer Research Center.
