German universities are developed upon the principle of being “places for research and learning”. So they are not just institutions in which to study particular subjects, but are also centres for scientific research.
The research centres at German universities would be inconceivable if it was not for the complete co-operation of scientists, research establishments and institutes within and abroad. Due to the success of this working relationship, many international researchers and professors choose to work in Germany.
The universities receive funding from the public hand, foundations, or from third-party research contracts. This form of "third-party-research" is a necessary form of income for universities because of their tight budgets.
As well, the universities can request special research projects from the German Research Council (DFG), in order to fund the upcoming generation of scientists. These types of projects usually run for 12 years. The institutions receive funding for these projects from the federal and regional governments, and the universities can also include non-university organisations in their projects.
