DFG is the central public funding organization for academic research in Germany. Among other things, universities and public research institutions can apply to DFG to get support for Collaborative Research Centers (Sonderforschungsbereiche). These are university institutions in which scientists and researchers from different academic fields cooperate in long-term research programs.
Collaborative Research Centers are usually planned for twelve year periods and are financed by the German government and the German federal states, the Länder. This enables the individual universities to guarantee long-term inter-disciplinary research even in times of tighter budgets. These grants and projects also give the universities a chance to support, encourage and promote young scientists who are just getting started in their research fields.
Because the criteria for establishing Collaborative Research Centers are very strict, any university that has one meets extremely high quality standards. The research projects that are funded at these centers are manifold: the spectrum goes from "Waste Management - The Treatment of Contaminated Soils" to "Evaluation of Insurance and Investment Decisions using Non-traditional Concepts of Rationality".
Collaborative Research Centers can also integrate industry, business and research institutions that are not connected to the university into their projects. They also maintain close ties to other scientific institutions, researchers abroad and other universities.
Presently, DFG sponsors 292 Collaborative Research Centers. Some 25 new projects are added to the list every year, taking the place of older projects that have been concluded or run out.
