The Leibniz Association of German Research Institutes (WGL) comprises around 80 institutes. The association works predominantly as a partner to universities, business and policy makers in an area of research between basic science and applications on an international level. Particular strengths of the association are the variety of its institutes and its work on current relevant research in a broad and interdisciplinary manner.
The association is structured thus:
- Liberal arts and educational research
- Economics, social sciences, regional infrastructure research
- Life sciences
- Mathematics, natural sciences, engineering
- Environmental sciences
The Leibniz Association of German Research Institutes sees itself as a bridge between traditional research and customer oriented breakthroughs. Many of the association's institutes were founded to solve specific social demands.
It includes the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg and Institute for the German Language in Mannheim.
