Federal and State Research and Development Institutes

There are around 50 research organizations that are completely financed by the Federal Government of Germany and fall under the authority of the federal ministries. This so-called “department research”, (Ressortforschung), whose main duty is to support the respective federal ministry in its working, naturally contributes towards a general increase in information and knowledge. For instance, the Federal Authority for Radiation Protection is answerable to the Federal Ministry for Environment Protection and Reactor Safety and the Physikalisch-Technische Federal Authority comes under the Federal Ministry for Economy and Technology.

Some other Federal research and developmental organizations:

- Federal Institute for Population Research (Bundesinstitut für Bevölkerungsforschung) (BIB)

- Federal Research Agency for Agriculture (Bundesforschungsanstalt für Landwirtschaft) (FAL)

- Federal Agency for Cultivation Research on Cultivated Plants (Bundesanstalt für Züchtungsforschung an Kulturpflanzen) (BAZ)

- Institute for Labour Market and Vocation Research (Institut für Arbeitsmarkt- und Berufsforschung) (IAB)

- Federal Agency for Roads (Bundesanstalt für Straßenwesen) (BASt)

- Robert Koch Institute , Federal Institute for Infectious Diseases and Not Contagious Diseases (Robert Koch-Institut (RKI, Bundesinstitut für Infektionskrankheiten und nicht übertragbare Krankheiten)

- German Weather Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst) (DWD)

- Federal Research Agency for Fisheries (Bundesforschungsanstalt für Fischerei) (BFAFi)

The costs for the research and development activities of the Federal organizations remain almost unchanged over the last few years: they amount to about 665 Million euro ($ 601,600,000)

The federal character of Germany means that the Federal states are also actively involved in areas of research and development. They are basically responsible for politics governing universities and higher education. At the national level, this is the work of the “Permanent Conference of Cultural Ministers representing the Federal States in the Federal Republic” (Ständige Konferenz der Kultusminister der Länder in der Bundesrepublik). But in addition to that, there are state and communal Research agencies, funded by the Federal States. The State Research agencies cover a broad spectrum of topics ranging from information technology to urban planning and transportation development.
