The Heidelberg Academy of Science

German Academies of Science

Germany is a republic comprising 16 federal states. It therefore doesn’t have one singular National Academy of Science but rather several different ones that are interconnected through the “German Academy of Science” which is based in Mainz. There are 1,400 active members in the academy, whose chief goal is to maintain and develop the study of science in Germany. It is particularly dedicated to the discipline of collaborative research.

There are seven regional Science Academies in Germany:

- The North-Rhine Westphalia Academy of Science based in Düsseldorf
- The Bavarian Academy of Science based in Munich
- The Berlin Brandenburg Academy of Science
- The Saxon Academy of Science based in Leipzig
- The Heidelberg Academy of Science
- The Academy of Science in Göttingen
- Academy of Science and Scientific Literature based in Mainz.

In addition there's the German Academy of Natural Sciences based in Halle, in eastern Germany. It's named after the Emperor Leopold. However, it is not a member of the National Academy.

The German Academy of Science acts as a facilitator for the study of science and its economic applications in industry. It is often the first point of contact for those interested in developing international scientific and research collaborations. The national academy covers its basic costs through these types of collaborations with the business sector.
