Foundations, Organizations and Societies - an Overview
A large number of organizations in Germany promote research. And it’s true that it isn’t always easy to find your way around the multitude of research outfits.
The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation
The Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung (AVH) is among the most important research foundations for international scientists. The foundation awards up to 500 research fellowships annually to highly qualified foreign scholars, who have a doctorate. The research fellowships enable them to undertake long-term periods of research in Germany. Researchers from all nations and from all fields of research can apply for the fellowships. In addition the Humboldt Foundation annually awards 100 research prizes to outstanding international scientists. And that’s not all: The Humboldt Foundation also grants 100 research scholarships to German scientists for research related stays abroad. The Foundation also offers several special scholarships, for instance Bundeskanzler Scholarships to prospective managers in academic, economic, political and social fields from the USA, and more recently also from Russia.
The "Independent new generation" of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science
A special effort is made to promote young scientists in the Independent Junior Research Groups within the Max Planck Society. Here talented young scientists, who have excelled in their respective fields are given a chance of qualifying for top positions in the scientific field as part of a five-year fixed-term research program. As of now, there are about 50 Independent Junior Research Groups in the Max Planck Society. In addition, about 3000 guest scientists and visiting scholars a year work at the Max Planck Institutes.
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG)
One of the most important aims of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft DFG is to promote young scientists and scholars. As the “central institute of self-administration for Science”, The DFG annually promotes 20,000 research projects. As a general rule all applicants must be German citizens. Foreign scholars, however, may still be eligible to apply for limited funding.
And Much More
Apart from the DFG, there are a host of other important organizations such as the Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst (DAAD). The DAAD supports doctoral candidates and also provides comprehensive guidance.
The Volkswagen Foundation, which can also promote all scientfic fields, concentrates mainly on its own programs and special areas. The foundation does not extend financial support to individuals, but only to scientific outfits and organizations.
International scientists thus have several possibilities to attain grants or scholarships in Germany.
