The 15th World Congress of Applied Linguistics (AILA 2008) will take place in Essen from August 24th to August 29th, 2008, under the overall focus of "Multilingualism: Challenges and Opportunities". The multinational meeting is the most important conference worldwide in the field of applied linguistics. This year, it attracts around 2000 researchers. Apart from over 800 individual papers and 100 regular symposia, there will be plenary talks by speakers such as Neville Alexander (South Africa), Jim Cummins (Canada), Shi-Xu (China), Konrad Ehlich (Germany) and Claire Kramsch (USA). The conference programme also includes a range of excursions to the Ruhr region as well as a concert of the Nationaal Jeugd Orkest Summer Academy.
