From July 25th to July 27th, 2008, the annual Emmy Noether meeting of the German Research Foundation (DFG) took place in Potsdam. Around 160 young researchers, either current funding recipients and alumni of the DFG's Emmy Noether programme, came together to discuss current developments at German universities such as the introduction of Bachelor's and Master\'s courses or increasing international competition. The discussions made it clear that the unity of teaching and research continues to be seen as essential in Germany, that the international competitiveness of German universities, however, still leaves a lot to be desired.
The Emmy Noether Programme, which is named after the mathematician Emmy Noether (1882-1935), enables young scientists and researchers to gain early scientific independence.
