An international team of researchers led by German biologists Frank Wiens and Annette Zitzmann from the University of Bayreuth has recorded what may be the first chronic alcohol intake in the wild: a mammal closely resembling the earliest primates has been drinking palm beer on a daily basis for maybe millions of years. Their research suggests that alcoholism is much older than mankind or the invention of brewing - on top of this, however, this particular mammal never gets drunk. As Wiens and Zitzmann argue, this may even indicate a beneficial effect of alcohol: 'The trait of alcohol consumption is actively maintained during evolution, so the overall effect must be beneficial.'
