Sports in the Media
Football—it’s been said to be the “greatest inessential in the world.” And a look at the amount of football coverage on German TV, radio and in the press would seem to indicate the media feels the same way. When sports are shown on German TV, its usually the kind involving 22 people kicking around a black-and-white ball. The public television stations show mostly football and tennis matches. Special sports channels, mostly available over cable or satellite, offer a wider variety. From darts to Sumo wrestling, nearly everything’s served up here. After football, Formula One racing is the most important sport in the media’s eyes, especially since the rise of German racing star Michael Schumacher. His success has meant Formula One has taken over tennis as the second most loved sport. Newspapers have their sports sections, and sports magazines keep readers abreast of the latest in body and sports culture. So those couch potatoes who’d rather read their sports than participate in them will do just fine.
